About the Siberian Husky
The Siberian Husky was developed by the Chukchi people of northeastern Siberia over 3,000 years ago. They bred the dogs to pull sleds across vast distances in brutal cold โ often for 100 miles a day โ while still being gentle enough to sleep alongside children at night.
Today, Huskies are popular family pets and dog-sport athletes. They still hold the endurance and cold tolerance of their ancestors, which means they need serious exercise and lots of supervision.
Temperament and personality
Huskies are friendly, outgoing, and famously mischievous. They're not protective โ a stranger is just a friend they haven't met yet. They're also notoriously independent and stubborn, so training is more about cooperation than obedience.
- Friendly: Greet everyone like a long-lost friend.
- Escape artists: Can dig, climb, and squeeze through any gap.
- Vocal: Famous for howls, "woo-woos," and dramatic talking.
- Pack-oriented: Prefer company, human or canine.
Size and appearance
Siberian Huskies stand 20โ24 inches tall and weigh 35โ60 pounds. They have a thick double coat in a wide range of colors โ black, gray, red, and white, with distinctive facial masks. Their blue or heterochromic (one blue, one brown) eyes are iconic.
They shed heavily twice a year ("blowing coat") and moderately the rest of the time.
Exercise and care
Huskies need a lot of exercise โ 90 minutes to 2 hours daily. They love running, hiking, and pulling sports. A securely fenced yard is non-negotiable โ Huskies will jump, dig, or climb out of anything less.
Health-wise, they're prone to hip dysplasia, eye conditions like cataracts, and zinc-responsive dermatosis.
Is a Siberian Husky right for you?
Huskies are ideal if you're very active, have a secure yard, and love a playful, independent companion. They're not ideal for apartments, first-time owners, or people who want an obedient, off-leash dog.
