About the Pembroke Welsh Corgi

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is one of the oldest herding breeds in Britain, with roots stretching back over 1,000 years to Wales. They were bred to herd cattle by nipping at their heels โ€” a job that required intelligence, speed, and the low profile that let them dodge a kick.

Two breeds share the Corgi name: the Pembroke (short tail, more popular worldwide) and the Cardigan (long tail). The Pembroke became a household name thanks to Queen Elizabeth II, who owned more than 30 of them during her reign.

Temperament and personality

Corgis are affectionate, alert, and surprisingly athletic. They love being part of family life and follow their people from room to room. They're also herding dogs at heart โ€” which means they'll try to herd children, cats, and even other dogs.

Size and appearance

Corgis stand 10โ€“12 inches tall and weigh 22โ€“30 pounds. They have a long, low body, short legs, upright ears, and a fox-like face. Coat colors include red, sable, fawn, and black-and-tan, usually with white markings.

Despite the short legs, they can run surprisingly fast.

Exercise and care

Corgis need 45โ€“60 minutes of daily exercise plus mental stimulation. They love walks, fetch, and puzzle games. Their herding instincts make them excellent at agility and rally obedience.

Health-wise, they're prone to hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, and obesity. Their long backs also make them susceptible to disc issues, so jumping off furniture should be discouraged.

Is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi right for you?

Corgis are ideal if you want a small, intelligent, affectionate dog with a big personality. They're not ideal for very quiet households, since they bark often, or for people who can't commit to daily exercise.
