About the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever โ€” or just "Lab" โ€” is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world, and in the US it's held the top spot for over three decades. Despite the name, Labs actually originated in Newfoundland, not Labrador. Fishermen there bred them to help haul nets and retrieve fish, and they were later refined in England into the breed we know today.

Labs are famous for their easygoing, eager-to-please nature. They're highly trainable, patient with children, and generally get along with other dogs and even cats. That combination has made them the go-to breed for guide dogs, search-and-rescue teams, and family pets alike.

Temperament and personality

Labs are the classic "everyone's friend" dog. They're outgoing, affectionate, and rarely aggressive. They bond deeply with their families and can be prone to separation anxiety if left alone for long stretches.

Size and appearance

Labs stand 21โ€“25 inches tall and weigh 55โ€“80 pounds. They have a short, dense, water-resistant double coat that comes in three recognized colors: black, yellow, and chocolate. Their otter-like tail โ€” thick and strong โ€” is one of their most distinctive features.

They need only occasional grooming, though they shed a lot year-round.

Exercise and care

Labs are energetic dogs that need at least an hour of real exercise every day. They love swimming, fetching, running, and hiking. Without enough activity, they can become destructive.

Health-wise, they're prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, obesity, and certain eye conditions. Keeping them lean and active is the best prevention.

Is a Labrador Retriever right for you?

Labs are ideal if you have time for daily exercise, love an affectionate shadow, and want a dog that's great with kids. They're not ideal for people who work long hours away from home, live in small apartments without easy outdoor access, or dislike shedding.
