About the Golden Retriever
The Golden Retriever is one of the most beloved family dogs in the world, and for good reason. Bred in the Scottish Highlands in the 1860s by Lord Tweedmouth, the breed was designed to retrieve waterfowl during hunting โ a job that required a soft mouth, strong swimming ability, and unwavering patience.
Today, that same temperament makes them exceptional companions. Goldens are famously gentle, eager to please, and remarkably patient with children. They're also highly intelligent, which is why you'll see them working as guide dogs, therapy dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and service animals around the world.
Temperament and personality
If you're looking for a dog that gets along with nearly everyone, the Golden Retriever is a strong contender. They're naturally friendly โ sometimes to a fault โ and rarely show aggression. They bond deeply with their families and dislike being left alone for long stretches.
- Friendly with strangers: Goldens greet almost everyone like an old friend.
- Patient with kids: One of the best breeds for families with young children.
- Eager to please: Highly trainable, which makes them great for first-time owners.
- Not great watchdogs: They're more likely to lick an intruder than bark at one.
Size and appearance
Goldens are a large breed, standing 21โ24 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing 55โ75 pounds. They have a dense, water-resistant double coat that ranges from cream to deep gold. That coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent mats, and daily during shedding season.
Their litters are often large โ six to ten puppies is common โ and they mature slowly, not reaching full adult size until about 18 months.
Exercise and care
Golden Retrievers are energetic dogs that need real exercise every day โ think 60 minutes minimum of walking, fetch, swimming, or running. Without it, they get bored and destructive. They excel at dog sports like agility, dock diving, and obedience trials.
Health-wise, Goldens are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, certain cancers, and skin allergies. Buying from a reputable breeder who screens for these conditions is worth the extra cost.
Is a Golden Retriever right for you?
Goldens are ideal if you have time for daily exercise, enjoy an affectionate shadow, and want a dog that's good with kids and other pets. They're not ideal for people who work long hours away from home, live in small apartments without easy outdoor access, or dislike shedding.
