About the German Shepherd
The German Shepherd was developed in 1899 by a German cavalry captain named Max von Stephanitz, who wanted a dog that combined intelligence, physical strength, and unwavering loyalty. His vision worked โ the breed became one of the world's most versatile working dogs within a generation.
Today, German Shepherds serve as police dogs, military dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, service dogs, and family companions. They're among the most intelligent and capable breeds in the world โ but that capability comes with real responsibility for owners.
Temperament and personality
German Shepherds are confident, alert, and highly protective. They're naturally aloof with strangers but deeply devoted to their families. Early socialization is essential โ without it, their protective instincts can turn into wariness or aggression.
- Loyal: Deeply bonded to their family and territory.
- Trainable: Among the easiest breeds to train for complex tasks.
- Protective: Natural watchdogs and guardians.
- Needs a job: Without purpose, they get bored and destructive.
Size and appearance
German Shepherds stand 22โ26 inches tall and weigh 50โ90 pounds. They have a thick double coat that's usually black-and-tan or all black, and a distinctive sloping backline in show lines (working lines tend to be more level).
They shed heavily year-round and "blow coat" twice a year, meaning daily brushing is essential during those periods.
Exercise and care
Shepherds need serious daily exercise โ at least 90 minutes of walking, running, or training work. They thrive with a job to do: obedience, tracking, protection sports, or search-and-rescue training all keep them engaged.
Health-wise, they're prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and degenerative myelopathy. Buying from a breeder who screens for these is worth the cost.
Is a German Shepherd right for you?
German Shepherds are ideal if you're an experienced dog owner with time for training, exercise, and mental engagement. They're not ideal for first-time owners, apartment dwellers, or people who are away from home all day.
