About the Beagle

The Beagle is a small scent hound developed in England to hunt rabbits and hares. Beagles hunt in packs, and that pack instinct shapes everything about their personality β€” they love company, work well with other dogs, and are happiest when they're part of a group.

Their incredible sense of smell is legendary β€” a Beagle's nose has over 220 million scent receptors (humans have about 5 million). That's why they're widely used as detection dogs at airports and border crossings.

Temperament and personality

Beagles are merry, curious, and endlessly food-motivated. They're friendly with almost everyone, including kids and strangers, and get along well with other dogs. But that nose can lead them into trouble β€” a Beagle off-leash will follow a scent trail for miles.

Size and appearance

Beagles stand 13–15 inches tall and weigh 20–30 pounds. They have a short, dense, weather-resistant coat in the classic tricolor (black, tan, white), plus red-and-white and lemon-and-white variations.

Their long, floppy ears and pleading brown eyes are iconic. They shed moderately year-round.

Exercise and care

Beagles need 60+ minutes of daily exercise, plus mental stimulation. Sniff-based activities β€” nose work, tracking games, puzzle feeders β€” are more tiring for them than plain walks.

Health-wise, they're prone to obesity, ear infections, and hypothyroidism. Keep them lean and check their ears weekly.

Is a Beagle right for you?

Beagles are ideal if you want a friendly, low-maintenance dog and have a securely fenced yard. They're not ideal for people who want an off-leash running companion, can't handle howling, or are away from home for long stretches.
