About the Sphynx

Despite the name, the Sphynx isn't actually from Egypt โ€” the breed originated in Toronto, Canada, in 1966, when a domestic cat gave birth to a hairless kitten named Prune. Breeders developed the trait into a stable breed over the following decades.

Sphynx cats aren't completely hairless โ€” they have a fine layer of peach-fuzz-like down. But it's so thin that their skin is visible and warm to the touch. Their body temperature runs higher than most cats, which is why they feel like living hot water bottles.

Temperament and personality

Sphynx cats are famously extroverted, energetic, and affectionate. They follow their owners around the house, climb onto shoulders, and often greet guests at the door. They're one of the most dog-like cat breeds in existence.

Size and appearance

Sphynx cats stand 8โ€“10 inches tall and weigh 6โ€“12 pounds. They have a muscular, athletic build, large ears, prominent cheekbones, and wrinkled skin โ€” especially around the shoulders and face. Their skin comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

Because they lack a coat, Sphynx cats are prone to sunburn and cold. They should stay indoors and may need a sweater in winter.

Care and grooming

Sphynx cats need weekly baths to remove the oils their skin produces (no coat means no absorption). Their ears also need regular cleaning โ€” they produce more wax than most cats. And they eat more than average to maintain their body temperature.

Health-wise, they're prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and skin conditions. Buying from a breeder who screens for HCM matters.

Is a Sphynx right for you?

Sphynx cats are ideal if you want a highly interactive, dog-like cat and don't mind regular grooming. They're not ideal for people who are away often, dislike the feel of warm skin, or want a low-maintenance cat.
