About the Norwegian Forest Cat

The Norwegian Forest Cat โ€” affectionately called the "Wegie" โ€” is a natural breed that developed in Norway over centuries, likely descended from shorthaired cats brought by Viking explorers and longhaired cats from the Middle East.

They were mentioned in Norse mythology long before being formally bred โ€” the goddess Freya's chariot was said to be pulled by two large cats that resemble modern Norwegian Forest Cats. The breed was nearly lost in the 1900s but was revived by Norwegian breeders in the 1930s and officially recognized in 1977.

Temperament and personality

Wegies are independent but affectionate โ€” they like to be near their people but not necessarily on them. They're also famously patient and calm, even with children and other pets. But their wild heritage shows in their love of climbing and their remarkable athleticism.

Size and appearance

Norwegian Forest Cats are one of the largest domestic breeds, standing 9โ€“12 inches tall and weighing 12โ€“16 pounds. They have a long, muscular body, tufted ears (like a lynx), a thick double coat, and a bushy tail that can wrap around their entire body for warmth.

Their coat is water-resistant and comes in almost any color except color-point patterns.

Care and grooming

Their thick coat needs serious grooming โ€” brushing two to three times a week, and daily during shedding season. Their coat thickens dramatically in winter and sheds heavily in spring.

Health-wise, they're prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), hip dysplasia, and a genetic condition called glycogen storage disease IV. Reputable breeders screen for these.

Is a Norwegian Forest Cat right for you?

Wegies are ideal if you want a large, independent, athletic cat and are willing to commit to regular grooming. They're not ideal for people who want a lap cat or who dislike heavy shedding.
